False ‘Rocket Man’ Theology

A few days ago Elton John gave an interview with Sky News in which he spoke about Jesus’s position on same-sex marriage.  In his view, “If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was, saying this (same-sex marriage) could not happen.  He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that’s what the church should be about.”  As a rock n roll theologian, I would suggest Mr John not quit his day job.

First, Jesus is alive and well sitting at the right hand of the Father.  Secondly, Jesus is not a Christian, he is the Christ.  A Christian is a follower of Christ.  Thirdly, Jesus came to meet with Abraham before he authorized the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Genesis 18:17.  If you remember the story (Genesis 18:23-33), Abraham negotiated with the Lord to spare the city and he got the Lord to agree that if he found 10 righteous he would spare the city. However when 2 angels to the city, Lot took them to his house.  Genesis 19:4-5, “But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house around, both old and young, all the people of every quarter: And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.”  The word ‘know’ is translated in the American Standard Version as ‘have sex with’.  These men were destroyed with the city (Genesis 19:24-25).

Why was that, because the Lord spoke to Moses in Leviticus 20:13 “If a man also lie with mankind as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be on them.”  Just because Jesus is giving people time to repent does not mean that the penalty has been done away with.

Does Jesus love people? Yes.  Is he compassionate? Yes. Is he forgiving? Yes.  Is he accepting of sin? NO.  Jesus seeks those who want to enter into same-sex marriage to come to repentance.  He loves them but he cannot tolerate the sin of Leviticus 20:13.  He could not put his blessing on same-sex marriage in light of Leviticus 20:13 because “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and far ever.  Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines………..”  Hebrews 13:8-9.

Mr. John, Jesus loves you but not your conduct which He considers to be a sin.  Note Hebrews 13:8-9.  You are proposing a strange doctrine to justify your impending marriage.  Jesus cannot bless sin.  His love for you does not allow him to approve your conduct which is against the word of God.  His ‘go, and sin no more’ is still available to you.  Call upon Him.
